Many of them used their newfound success as authors to purvey their societal and political concerns. Veteran soldiers turned major SciFi authors include both David Drake and Joe Haldemann. You see, many talented and creative young soldiers coming home were able to fabricate wonderful tales of science fiction drawing from their recent military experience as inspiration. But soon came the biggest contributor to the subgenre. Other future war stories followed after primarily coming to in the early-mid 1900's. ![]() His book wasn't a pure science fiction novel as what we know today, but more of a story written about a "future war". However, a clear precursor to the subject was clearly established in The Battle of Dorking, a George Chesney story written in 1871. ![]() Despite military history going back since the beginning of time, military science fiction hasn't always been a dedicated genre. ![]()

In the Core Curriculum, new emphasis is being placed on text-dependent analysis. Reading 47 will provide my students with an opportunity to reflect on differences between science fiction and realistic fiction. This unit will introduce students to a subgenre of African American literature while also providing them with the opportunity to develop a more nuanced understanding of the machinery of slavery. In 47, Walter Mosley elucidates (almost incidentally) how close to impossible it was for slaves to overthrow their bondage because of the machinery of the law, and their inability to match their white masters’ firepower, as well as the personal and familial bonds that made the price of rebellion one that affected family and community members. ![]() Walter Mosley mixes social realism and science fiction in 47, the story of a young slave in 1832.
